All Star Karate

Review!

Start!

Ever fancied being a martial arts master? Well, All Star Karate won't teach you much about real martial arts, but it is a fun alternative to some of the sillier fighting games out there!
If you follow the Story Mode you take the role of a young wannabe who catches the eye of an old karate master after a bust up in the street with some ninjas. The master trains you, using your remote and nunchuk to throw punches and kicks, until you're ready to enter tournaments and start earning those precious belts.

Chop chop!

Throwing punches with the remote is good fun, but kicks aren't quite as convincing. You have to hold down the B button as you punch to do a kick, which feels a bit weird! You might also find that the nunchuk isn't as good as the remote at detecting your movements, so for the very best performance you'll need two remotes with the Motion Plus add-on. Without those, the game can be a bit frustrating.
There are loads of other things to do, including mini-games where you have to chop suitcases open or tie your karate belt as fast as possible. Mess it up and your pants fall down! There's even something to do when you pause the game - a fly buzzes on-screen and you can catch him with the remote!

Martials arts mates!

All Star Karate is at its best when you're fighting with a friend side-by-side. The multiplayer mode is really cool, and a lot easier to enjoy than the story tournaments, which can be annoying. Just make sure those punches are thrown at the TV, not at each other!

Custom characters

One of the most fun features is the number of ways you can customise the game. The more you play, the more costumes you'll unlock, and some of them are really wacky. You can play as a boy or girl character, and even change their hair to bright green! If you want to get technical you can also edit your own "kata", or sequence of fighting moves, for the ultimate in kustomised karate!

Conclusion!

All Star Karate is an interesting experiment in Wii fighting games, but waggling your arms doesn't always capture the feeling of real martial arts. There are plenty of mini-games and challenges to make up for it, though, and when played with a mate it's a great laugh. Give it a spin if you like the idea of a fighting game that's a bit out of the ordinary.
