Mashing up Mario Kart and LittleBigPlanet, ModNation Racers is one of the coolest racing games to hit the PS3 ever. Check it out as we take it for a spin!
Tag is one of the hottest new racers in the ModNation Racing league, but it's up to you to take him to the top and defeat reigning champ Espresso. Belting around crazy courses, making crazy leaps through rings of fire, and using an arsenal of wild weaponry, only the wackiest racer can take the championship cup!
Driving in ModNation is fast, fun and furious. You clock up points and boost by drifting around corners or chasing other racers, but its the weapons that make the difference. Rockets, zappers and sonic bombs are just some of the gadgets you'll get to play with, and each time you collect a power-up pod, you increase the power of whatever you're holding. Build them up to the top level and let rip for the chance to blast into first place! You can also trade in your boost power for a shield by holding down the circle button - great for surviving incoming attacks!
The controls can feel a bit slippery if you're used to Mario Kart, but once you get the hang of them you'll love throwing these dinky cars around the fantastic courses. Each one is full of secrets and short cuts, and comes with bonus objectives to complete. Do well in races and you'll earn more items and costumes to put into your own creations. There's always something new and cool to discover!
Funny Bones!
Don't skip past the story scenes in the Career Mode. This is a really funny game, with tons of great jokes. We especially liked the bickering commentators who spend most of the race insulting each other or laughing at racers who get wiped out!
Creating your own tracks is dead easy. You just hop into a bulldozer and drive it around - the game fills in the track behind you! Then it's up to you to tweak it, add bumps, dips and jumps, and drop in whatever scenery you fancy. If you're in a rush, you can let the game do all that for you. You can be driving around on your new track in just a few minutes!
It's nice to share
Once you've created a car, course or character, you can share it with everyone else. Head to the Share Station to upload your creations, or download whatever other players have been making. The most popular creations get pride of place in the Mod Zone lobby where you can see other online racers hanging out. At the moment there are loads of copies of famous characters like Spider-Man and Mario, but just like LittleBigPlanet those will probably get deleted soon. Sony characters are fine though - check out these wicked Ratchet and Clank racers!
The only big problem with ModNation Racers is the terribly slow loading. Each race takes a reeeeeeeaaaaally long time to load! You could almost go and play another game while you wait! Apart from that silly stumble, ModNation Racers offers cool single player races, brilliant multiplayer modes and the chance to go absolutely crazy with your own designs. It's one of the most fun games on the PS3 right now!
