Review!!
Chances are you've played Puzzle Bobble already, or at least seen something that has ripped it off. The game has been around for years, and there are loads of free versions on the internet. You aim left and right, then shoot coloured bubbles and try to match three or more of the same colour. When you do, they pop and any bubbles hanging underneath disappear as well. Clear the screen and it's on to the next stage!
The game doesn't even take advantage of the 3DS, with the only 3D effect being a rotating background. You can't even use the stylus for aiming! This is a real pity, as the other controls are sticky and twitchy. Sometimes the target goes left, even though you're pressing right!
If you really love Puzzle Bobble, you should stick with Puzzle Bobble Galaxy which came out for the normal DS a few years ago. It's got multiplayer modes, stylus control plus loads of minigames and extras. Basically, everything this version doesn't have!
Bub and Bob are a pair of dinosaurs who have to save the universe from evil aliens by matching coloured bubbles and popping them before time runs out. Who knew the end of the world would be so weird?
The problem with Puzzle Bobble Universe is that's really all there is to it. This is a really basic version of the game, with only a couple of power ups and some boss fights to keep things interesting. There are only two game modes, and no multiplayer. What a shame.
Puzzle Bobble is a great game, but there are better and cheaper ways to enjoy it than this disappointing and basic version. It might have worked better as a download on the upcoming 3DS Store, but as a full-price game in a box? Forget it.
